Summary
This free Secret Santa generator draws names for a gift exchange in your browser. Paste the group, put couples or family on one rules line so they never draw each other, optionally set a budget and secret codenames, then press Draw names. Nobody gets themselves, an optional No swaps rule stops A and B drawing each other, and each person taps their own name to see a single match. The page explains how the draw avoids dead ends and why a hat fails more often than you think.
Secret Santa Generator: Draw Names Online in Seconds
Paste your group, block any pairs, and get a fair draw where nobody pulls their own name. Each person taps to see only their own match.
What happens when you press Draw names
One giver at a time
The tool takes the person with the fewest possible receivers first, then picks one of those at random. Starting with the tightest case avoids most dead ends. If a path fails, it steps back and tries another.
Rules before randomness
Nobody draws themselves. Anyone on the same rules line is blocked from the others on it. With No swaps ticked, two people can never draw each other, so the draw usually closes into one big loop.
Hidden until tapped
Results stay folded. Each person taps their own name and sees one line: who they give to, plus the budget. Reveal all is there for the organiser. Everything runs in your browser.
A hat works until it does not
Names in a hat is the classic method, and it is fine for a living room. The trouble is the maths. If everyone pulls once, the chance that nobody draws their own name settles near 37 percent (about 1 in e) as the group grows. For a group of ten, roughly 6 draws in 10 need someone to put a slip back and start over. That is how the whole group learns who pulled themselves.
- A shuffled script never shows anyone their own name
- Blocked pairs are handled before the reveal, not after
- Online, you can run it before the party and send results privately
Names are the whole game, so treat them like data
A draw only works if the list is clean. Two Alexes, a Sam and a Samantha, or a nickname that someone else uses for a different person will confuse the result. Type the name your group actually uses, and add a last initial when two people share a first name. The tool rejects exact duplicates so you catch this before the draw, not at the party.
- Use the name people answer to, not the legal one
- Add an initial for two Alexes: Alex R and Alex T
- Codenames such as Sneaky Otter keep chat anonymous
Three checks that save the exchange
-
1
Fix the budget before the draw
Say the number out loud and type it in the budget box. A gift that is far above or below the rest is what people remember, and not kindly.
-
2
Set the rules for households
Put each couple or family on one line of the rules box. It takes 20 seconds and stops the most awkward draw there is: a partner buying for a partner.
-
3
Send results privately
Share each person's line one to one, never in the group chat. If someone loses theirs, you can reopen the page and use Reveal all yourself, but redrawing changes everyone's match.
